AaB Aalborg 0-3 Man Utd

Oct 1, 2008

Dimitar Berbatov got off the mark with a double strike as Manchester United cruised to Champions League victory against Aalborg in Denmark.

Wayne Rooney slid home a pass from Ryan Giggs – on for Paul Scholes after he was stretchered off with a knee injury – to open the scoring after 22 minutes.

Berbatov opened his goal account when he took advantage of a defensive mix-up to score 10 minutes after half-time.

He then volleyed in Cristiano Ronaldo’s cross for his second after 79 minutes.

United outclassed Bruce Rioch’s minnows, but injuries to Scholes and Rooney cast a shadow over the win, which leaves them with four points from their first two group games.

Arsenal 4-0 FC Porto

Oct 1, 2008

Arsenal comfortably overcame Porto to get their home campaign in Champions League Group G off to a perfect start.

Cristian Rodriguez’s header hit the bar and Lisandro’s shot was cleared off the line as Arsenal were lucky early on.

But Robin van Persie slid in to convert Emmanuel Adebayor’s cross to open the scoring and the Dutchman’s corner was headed in by Adebayor to make it 2-0.

Van Persie toe-poked his second on 48 minutes before Adebayor’s penalty after a foul on Nicklas Bendtner sealed it.

Arsenal could even afford to miss a host of chances – unlike at the weekend in a shock defeat by Hull – as they cantered to a vital three points.

Portsmouth 2-0 Tottenham

Sep 28, 2008

Tottenham were left rooted to the bottom of the Premier League after a tame display in a loss at Portsmouth.

Former Spurs striker Jermain Defoe put Pompey ahead when he drove in a penalty after Jermaine Jenas needlessly handled a Glen Little free-kick.

Spurs lacked a goal threat but were denied a penalty after an Aaron Lennon cross struck Lassana Diarra’s arm.

Peter Crouch nodded in Pompey’s second before Diarra was sent-off late on for two bookable offences.

Wigan 2-1 Man City

Sep 28, 2008

Wigan overcame Manchester City in a pulsating game at the JJB Stadium which saw yet another controversial penalty.

Following Manchester United’s dubious penalty on Saturday, Steve Bennett harshly adjudged City’s Javier Garrido to have brought down Wilson Palacios.

Amr Zaki calmly scored the penalty to ensure Wigan grabbed all three points as they moved up to 10th position.

Luis Antonio Valencia had given Wigan the lead with a fine strike, before Vincent Kompany equalised soon after.

Middlesbrough 0-1 West Brom

Sep 28, 2008

Jonas Olsson’s scrappy second-half strike handed West Brom their first away win of the season.

It was a happy return to Boro for West Brom boss Tony Mowbray, who played for the club for nine years.

The hosts were not without chances, with Afonso Alves hitting the bar and a David Wheater header also going close.

The winner came from a Jonathan Greening corner, and after Ishmael Miller hooked the ball back in, Sweden’s Olsson poked the ball home.
