Wigan 0-1 Middlesbrough

Jeremie Aliadiere scored an 89th-minute winner to give Middlesbrough their first away league victory of 2008 at the expense of Wigan.

The hosts dominated for long periods but were denied by an outstanding defensive performance from Boro.

Amr Zaki saw a first-half strike well saved by Ross Turnbull, who later thwarted Emile Heskey in fine fashion.

Standard Liege 2-1 Everton

Everton were sent crashing out of the Uefa Cup losing 4-3 on aggregate to an excellent Standard Liege side.

Despite an impressive start from the visitors, Axel Witsel volleyed home, before Phil Jagielka had given Everton hope with a second-half equaliser.

Belgium’s high-fliers ensured their progression with Milan Jovanovic’s penalty, after what seemed to be a fair tackle from Leighton Baines.

Despite a late surge, Everton were unable to grab the vital second goal.

Man City 2-1 Omonia Nicosia

Second-half goals from Elano and Shaun Wright-Phillips sank Omonia Nicosia and made sure of Manchester City’s progress into the group stages of the Uefa Cup.

City were poor in the first half but Elano broke the deadlock soon after the break, meeting a Robinho pass with a bullet shot into the bottom corner.

Wright-Phillips made it 2-0 soon after, firing home after riding two tackles.

Rasheed Alabi replied with a late header for Omonia but City still completed a routine 4-2 aggregate win.

Wisla Krakow 1-1 Tottenham

Tottenham edged into the Uefa Cup group stages with a narrow 3-2 aggregate win at Wisla Krakow that will do little to ease the pressure on boss Juande Ramos.

Despite holding a first leg lead, Spurs were totally bereft of confidence, and Radoslaw Sobolewski and Pawel Brozek threatened early on for the hosts.

Spurs nerves were calmed when Arkadiusz Glowacki deflected Gareth Bale’s cross into his own net to put Spurs 1-0 up.

But Brozek’s lob levelled the leg and Spurs just held on in a frantic finale.

Liverpool 3-1 PSV

Robbie Keane’s first goal since his £20.3m move from Tottenham helped Liverpool ease to victory over PSV Eindhoven in Champions League Group D.

Dirk Kuyt put the Reds ahead after four minutes, following up after Andreas Isaksson saved Fernando Torres’ volley.

Keane made it 2-0 before half-time when he hooked home Torres’ bouncing cross.

Steven Gerrard wrapped up the win with a ferocious free-kick – his 100th goal for Liverpool – before Danny Koevermans bundled home a consolation for PSV.
