Hull 0-5 Wigan

August 31st, 2008 efootie Posted in Hull City, Wigan Athletic, Premiership No Comments »

An Amr Zaki brace ensured Wigan picked up their first points of the season as they cruised to victory away at Hull.

The 25-year-old Egyptian stroked home Antonio Valencia’s cross for the third and fired in a thunderous drive that cannoned off the bar and over the line.

Wigan went in front as Kevin Kilbane’s in-swinging corner was turned into his own net by Sam Ricketts, while Valencia raced clear to double their advantage.

Heskey fired the fourth, before Zaki completed the rout with his second.

Wigan 0-1 Chelsea

August 25th, 2008 efootie Posted in Wigan Athletic, Chelsea, Premiership No Comments »

A disappointing Chelsea held off a determined Wigan to grind out a win courtesy of Deco’s 25-yard free-kick.

The midfielder scored after just three minutes when he found the top corner after Lee Cattermole had handled.

But Wigan hit back and Blues keeper Petr Cech had to pull off smart saves to keep out shots from Wilson Palacios and Amr Zaki.

Chelsea struggled for form but held on for a win as Cech again rescued them by keeping out a late Olivier Kapo strike.

West Ham 2-1 Wigan

August 17th, 2008 efootie Posted in Wigan Athletic, West Ham Utd, Premiership No Comments »

England boss Fabio Capello saw Dean Ashton score twice to help West Ham make a winning start to the season.

Ashton collected Julien Faubert’s early cross and turned past Paul Scharner before firing into the roof of the net.

The striker then scored from close range after Wigan failed to clear Faubert’s left-wing corner.

Eygpt striker Amr Zaki pulled a goal back with a stunning left-foot volley on his Wigan debut but also missed three golden opportunities to equalise.

West Ham boss Alan Curbishley began the day as the bookmakers’ favourite to be the first Premier League manager sacked this season and had nine first-team players already sidelined through injury.

Wigan 0-2 Man Utd

May 12th, 2008 efootie Posted in Wigan Athletic, Manchester United, Premiership 1 Comment »

Manchester United pipped rivals Chelsea to clinch their 17th title triumph with victory at Wigan.

Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring for United from the spot after 33 minutes following Emmerson Boyce’s foul on fit-again Wayne Rooney.

Emile Heskey then wasted Wigan’s best chance with a second-half header.

And substitute Ryan Giggs clinched United’s Premier League triumph - his 10th - with a cool finish from Rooney’s pass 10 minutes from time.

It sent manager Sir Alex Ferguson dancing down the touchline in the rain at the JJB Stadium in triumph as United were confirmed as champions two points clear of runners-up Chelsea.

Aston Villa 0-2 Wigan

May 4th, 2008 efootie Posted in Wigan Athletic, Aston Villa, Premiership No Comments »

Ecuador star Antonio Valencia scored two second-half goals to seal Wigan’s Premier League place for next season with a surprise win at Aston Villa.

Valencia, with just one goal in 29 previous matches for the Latics, was fortunate to see his shot deflect off Wilfried Bouma for the first goal.

But the second was a fine right-footed shot, as he surged into the box to beat Scott Carson at the near post.

Villa had plenty of chances, but Chris Kirkland pulled off some fine saves.

And Wigan’s second away win of the season puts a massive dent in Villa’s hopes of claiming the fifth Premier League spot that would guarantee Uefa Cup qualification.
