Charles N’Zogbia gave Newcastle the lead when he collected a long pass from Shay Given and fired in.

Luka Modric equalised when he ran on to a Michael Dawson ball and sent his low effort past Given.

Newcastle’s second successive win means they are now unbeaten in six and four points clear of a relegation zone they have been flirting with since the start of the season.

Olsson was dismissed when he brought down his tormentor Lennon and received his second yellow card of the match.

The 20-year-old Swede had no answer to Lennon’s direct running and suffered a horribly embarrassing afternoon.

In contrast, Lennon produced a performance full of pace, confidence and incisiveness.

With Blackburn one place and one point above Spurs in the table before the match, there was a lot at stake for both teams.

Robinho fired the opener for the home side in the 15th minute before Gelson Fernandes was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Bent ran clear and slotted home to equalise for Spurs and then side-footed home his second on the hour.

City’s Richard Dunne was shown a straight red and Spurs’ Benoit Assou-Ekotto was dismissed late on.

Spurs nerves were calmed when Arkadiusz Glowacki deflected Gareth Bale’s cross into his own net to put Spurs 1-0 up.

But Brozek’s lob levelled the leg and Spurs just held on in a frantic finale.
