Djibril Cisse scored on his Sunderland debut to condemn Tottenham to their second straight Premier League defeat.

Spurs, who dropped Dimitar Berbatov, were lucky not to trail at half-time after Steed Malbranque hit the post.

Gareth Bale powered a header over for the hosts soon after the re-start but they fell behind when Kieran Richardson rifled home after 55 minutes.

Spurs twice went close before Jermaine Jenas levelled but sub Cisse’s late header left Tottenham without a point.

Sunderland 0-1 Liverpool

Spanish striker Fernando Torres struck a brilliant late winner as Liverpool made hard work of beating Sunderland.

Torres collected a Xabi Alonso pass, turned into space and rifled home a sensational drive into Craig Gordon’s bottom right-hand corner from 25 yards.

Sunderland did not deserve to lose and Daryl Murphy headed their best chance straight at goalkeeper Pepe Reina.

Gordon saved from Yossi Benayoun and debutant Robbie Keane unintentionally blocked Torres’ shot before his winner.

After a turbulent couple of weeks for Liverpool which led to speculation in Saturday’s newspapers boss Rafa Benitez might quit the club, it was a much-needed early season boost for the Reds.

England winger Theo Walcott scored the winning goal as Arsenal ended the season with victory over Sunderland.

Walcott coolly slotted home on 24 minutes after latching onto a superb through-ball from skipper Gilberto.

Sunderland almost took the lead after 14 seconds but Carlos Edwards’ volley was well parried by Lukasz Fabianski.

Arsenal teenager Mark Randall had a goal disallowed while Fabianski had to save well to deny Sunderland striker Roy O’Donovan in injury time.

Bolton 2-0 Sunderland

May 4th, 2008 efootie Posted in Sunderland, Bolton, Premiership No Comments »

Bolton virtually safeguarded their Premier League status with a battling victory at home to Sunderland.

El-Hadji Diouf put them ahead just before half-time when he controlled a Kevin Nolan cross before firing home.

He should have added a second when he met Matthew Taylor’s cross with a header that was denied by the post.

Sunderland could have made them pay but Kenwyne Jones missed a glorious chance before a Daryl Murphy own goal handed Bolton three crucial points.

The win means that Bolton are three points ahead of the drop zone, but with their far superior goal difference it means they can go to Chelsea next weekend with their relegation fears eased.

Sunderland 3-2 Middlesbrough

Sunderland substitute Daryl Murphy headed home a dramatic injury-time winner to sink Middlesbrough in an absorbing Wear-Tees derby.

Tuncay calmly drove Boro ahead inside the fourth minute before Danny Higginbotham headed Sunderland’s equaliser just two minutes later.

A minute before half-time Michael Chopra fired home before Afonso Alves’ low shot levelled again for Boro.

Murphy headed home at the death to ensure Sunderland’s top-flight safety.

With the Black Cats slumping to defeat at Newcastle last week and Middlesbrough losing to Bolton, both sides knew the importance of victory.
