Arsenal 3-0 Newcastle

August 31st, 2008 efootie Posted in Newcastle, Arsenal, Premiership No Comments »

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie scored a brace as his side found some of their irresistible form to beat Newcastle.

Van Persie powered in a spot-kick after Charles N’Zogbia handled an Emmanuel Adebayor cross as Arsenal overwhelmed a depleted Newcastle.

Michael Owen shot wide for the Magpies but Emmanuel Eboue’s clever backheel left Van Persie to slide in and score.

A Nicky Butt header hit the Arsenal woodwork but Denilson added the home side’s third after an intricate move.

Michael Owen came off the bench to earn Newcastle a win over a Bolton side who paid the price for a missed penalty.

The visitors had a chance to take the lead when Steven Taylor handled a cross but Kevin Nolan saw his spot-kick saved by Magpies keeper Shay Given.

Owen punished the miss when he headed in a Geremi cross at the far post.

Manchester United made an unconvincing start to the defence of their Premier League title as they were held at Old Trafford by an impressive Newcastle.

The hosts were denied a penalty when James Milner appeared to handball, but Newcastle took a first-half lead when Obafemi Martins powered home a header.

Manchester United levelled only two minutes later when Darren Fletcher converted Ryan Giggs’ left-wing cross.

Nemanja Vidic headed against the bar, but Newcastle fully deserved a point.

Everton sealed Uefa Cup football as defender Joleon Lescott continued his remarkable goalscoring season.

Lescott volleyed home his 10th goal in all competitions to set up a comfortable win over Newcastle.

Yakubu headed Everton into a first-half lead, which was cancelled out by Michael Owen’s penalty.

After Lescott had restored Everton’s lead, Yakubu sealed victory with his second goal, slotting home The Toffees’ first penalty of the season.

The end of the season arrived at the right time for two teams whose resources were stretched even more by injury.

Goals from Michael Ballack and Florent Malouda handed Chelsea a deserved win against Newcastle and ensured the title race will go down to the final day.

Michael Owen had two first-half chances to give Newcastle the lead, while Ballack miscued when through on goal.

But Chelsea took control after the break, Ballack nodding in on 61 minutes and Malouda calmly adding a second.

The win moved Chelsea level on points with Manchester United, though their goal difference is vastly inferior.
