Steven Gerrard smashed in a 90th-minute drive as Liverpool came from behind to beat Middlesbrough at Anfield.

Striker Mido came off the bench to put the visitors ahead with a low, 30-yard drive on 70 minutes and it seemed his side were heading for victory.

But Jamie Carragher’s drive from the edge of the box flew in off Boro’s Emmanuel Pogatetz to give Liverpool an equaliser 16 minutes later.

And in stoppage time, Gerrard lashed in an angled shot to snatch the points.

It was a game Boro will feel desperately disappointed to have lost.

Mido returned to haunt his former club as Middlesbrough eased to a comfortable victory over Spurs at the Riverside.

Spurs dominated possession but it was Boro that created the chances and David Wheater was unfortunate to have a header ruled out for a foul.

His luck changed, though, in the second half when he bundled home the opener after Afonso Alves had hit the bar.

And substitute Mido wrapped it up as he fired in from 12 yards, before Rob Huth put through his own goal late on.

But it was of little consolation for Juande Ramos’s side after a performance lacking in incision and firepower was exposed by an effervescent Middlesbrough team.

Middlesbrough ran riot against a beleaguered Manchester City side.

City’s problems began when Richard Dunne saw red for fouling Tuncay and Stewart Downing scored from the spot.

Afonso Alves drilled home, then Downing hooked into the net and Alves ran clear to make it 4-0 before Adam Johnson scored with a deflected effort.

Fabio Rochemback’s fierce free-kick was followed by Jeremie Aliadiere’s low shot and, although Elano replied, Alves completed his hat-trick to make it 8-1

Chris Riggott and Tuncay headed home corners to preserve Middlesbrough’s top-flight status for another season.

Riggott, recalled from a loan spell at Championship promotion chasers Stoke City, headed home Fabio Rochemback’s corner on 40 minutes to settle nerves.

And three minutes into the second half, Tuncay repeated the feat, flicking home Stuart Downing’s inswinging delivery.

Portsmouth offered little, though Milan Baros was wasteful with two glorious chances inside the first 20 minutes.

But that will be of little concern to Boro, who bounced back from a run of just one win in 10 league matches to secure the three points they needed.

Sunderland substitute Daryl Murphy headed home a dramatic injury-time winner to sink Middlesbrough in an absorbing Wear-Tees derby.

Tuncay calmly drove Boro ahead inside the fourth minute before Danny Higginbotham headed Sunderland’s equaliser just two minutes later.

A minute before half-time Michael Chopra fired home before Afonso Alves’ low shot levelled again for Boro.

Murphy headed home at the death to ensure Sunderland’s top-flight safety.

With the Black Cats slumping to defeat at Newcastle last week and Middlesbrough losing to Bolton, both sides knew the importance of victory.
