Newcastle 1-0 Bolton

August 24th, 2008 efootie Posted in Newcastle, Bolton, Premiership No Comments »

Michael Owen came off the bench to earn Newcastle a win over a Bolton side who paid the price for a missed penalty.

The visitors had a chance to take the lead when Steven Taylor handled a cross but Kevin Nolan saw his spot-kick saved by Magpies keeper Shay Given.

Owen punished the miss when he headed in a Geremi cross at the far post.

Bolton 3-1 Stoke

August 17th, 2008 efootie Posted in Stoke City, Bolton, Premiership No Comments »

Bolton new boy Johan Elmander scored on his debut as Stoke were brushed aside on their Premier League debut.

The Potters’ physical approach posed problems early on but Bolton took control and went ahead when Gretar Steinsson’s attempted cross flew in.

Gary Cahill’s free-kick saw Kevin Davies’s flicked header make it 2-0 and Elmander sealed victory with a fine glancing header just before the break.

Substitute Ricardo Fuller made it 3-1 with an injury-time header for Stoke.

Fuller’s consolation was barely deserved although it was probably down to Bolton’s lack of ambition in an almost-chanceless second period.

Chelsea 1-1 Bolton

May 12th, 2008 efootie Posted in Bolton, Chelsea, Premiership No Comments »

Bolton’s Matthew Taylor scored a late equaliser but with Manchester United winning at Wigan the goal did not cost Chelsea the Premier League title.

On a disappointing afternoon, Chelsea skipper John Terry dislocated his elbow but is hopeful of being fit for the Champions League final on 21 May.

Ali Al Habsi denied Florent Malouda and Didier Droba before substitute Andriy Shevchenko struck from six yards.

Ashley Cole cleared off the line before Taylor struck with a low drive.

Central defender Alex was culpable for the equaliser after a sloppy, lazy clearance that fell invitingly to Davies.

But in truth, there can be little doubt that the players already knew that with United leading 2-0 at Wigan their valiant quest to wrestle the title from Sir Alex Ferguson’s team was going to fall short.

Bolton 2-0 Sunderland

May 4th, 2008 efootie Posted in Sunderland, Bolton, Premiership No Comments »

Bolton virtually safeguarded their Premier League status with a battling victory at home to Sunderland.

El-Hadji Diouf put them ahead just before half-time when he controlled a Kevin Nolan cross before firing home.

He should have added a second when he met Matthew Taylor’s cross with a header that was denied by the post.

Sunderland could have made them pay but Kenwyne Jones missed a glorious chance before a Daryl Murphy own goal handed Bolton three crucial points.

The win means that Bolton are three points ahead of the drop zone, but with their far superior goal difference it means they can go to Chelsea next weekend with their relegation fears eased.

Tottenham 1-1 Bolton

April 27th, 2008 efootie Posted in Bolton, Premiership, Tottenham Hotspur No Comments »

Bolton held on for a valuable point in their battle against relegation despite being totally outplayed by Tottenham.

Spurs dominated the first half, but failed to create clear chances against a well-organised Bolton defence.

The visitors grabbed a shock lead when substitute Stelios Giannakopoulos stabbed home a scruffy goal from close range within 20 seconds of the restart.

Steed Malbranque turned in Robbie Keane’s shot to level before Dimitar Berbatov wasted a glorious late chance.

With new signing Luka Modric watching from the stands, Spurs had more possession than they knew what to do with in a one-sided first half.
