Fulham 1-1 Wigan

December 23rd, 2007 efootie Posted in Wigan Athletic, Fulham, Premiership, Misc No Comments »

Clint Dempsey’s late strike salvaged a draw for Fulham to mark Ray Lewington’s first match as caretaker boss with a point against fellow strugglers Wigan.

Carlos Bocanegra had a header cleared off the line and Paul Konchesky hit the bar in a Fulham-dominated first half.

But Wigan slowly got into the game and they took the lead when Marcus Bent controlled on the chest and lashed in.

However, Fulham kept battling and Dempsey denied Wigan a first away win of the season with a low 16-yard drive.

Fulham 0-1 Newcastle

Newcastle won a woeful game at Fulham thanks to an injury-time penalty from midfielder Joey Barton.

Elliot Omozusi was adjudged to have brought down Alan Smith in the Fulham box and Barton stepped up to coolly slot home his first goal for the club.

The Magpies scarcely deserved their win after a shocking game that was devoid of any creativity or quality.

Habib Beye flashed a header wide for the visitors and David Healy had two close efforts before Barton struck.

A flurry of second-half goals saw Blackburn twice come from behind to clinch a draw at Craven Cottage.

Fulham took the lead five minutes after the break with Danny Murphy’s penalty following Ryan Nelsen’s foul on Diomansy Kamara in the box.

But Brett Emerton levelled from close range six minutes later before Kamara put the hosts ahead again, sliding the ball in from four yards out.

With just over 10 minutes left, Stephen Warnock tapped in to seal the draw.
