Ashley Cole’s return to fitness has been one of the better slices of news for Fabio Capello in recent weeks. While other players have been dropping like flies, or playing at nowhere near their best, the sight of Cole pulling on a Chelsea shirt again would have been a fillip for the England manager and anyone with a betting system should take note.
Oddly though, the prospect of Cole playing in the World Cup might not be the best possible news for fans of his club side. I think it’s fair to say that Cole has become increasingly unhappy in recent months. Without raking over the coals of his personal life again, it’s well known things haven’t been going well for him off the pitch. As for on it, Cole clearly coverts a Champions League winner’s medal and he must be starting to wonder if he’ll ever win one with Chelsea. In short, it wouldn’t be a massive surprise if he didn’t start the next season at the same club, or indeed in the same country.
The obvious reasons aside, this is why the World Cup will be so important for Cole. He’s widely regarded as the best left-back playing today and the tournament will give him a chance to show other clubs around the globe what he can do. Those who have backed England at the best betting site odds should be pleased to know Cole will be doing his upmost to impress. The idea of players putting themselves in the shop window during a major tournament is not a new one, although it is more common for players to move to the Premier League because of a good display than away from it.
Of course, regardless of how well Cole plays in South Africa there’s no guarantee he will be able to cut it overseas. The history of football is littered with names who lit up the English leagues only to sink without trace abroad. Still, whatever happens Cole will have his sights firmly set on one thing – winning the World Cup.
