Newcastle have placed defender Steven Taylor on the transfer list after talks about a new contract stalled. The 24-year-old, currently out of action with a shoulder injury, is entering the final year of his contract with the Magpies and it seems the side want to cash in on him.
The club took the decision after Taylor rejected their latest wage offer which was thought to be in the region of £40,000 a week. It has been reported the centre back is holding out for a deal nearer £60,000.
It may be a case of the club playing hardball in the attempt to convince Taylor to lower his demands, but this could prove to be a risky game. Arsenal and Chelsea have both shown an interest in Taylor, so he could be set to leave. The Betfair Specialists believe the side could struggle without him.
In his seven years at the club, Taylor has made over 150 appearances in a Newcastle shirt. He played an important role last season in the club earning promotion back to the Premiership, starting 21 games in the Championship.
The player himself has made it clear he was stunned at the decision to make him available for transfer and added he is still willing to hold talks in the hope of agreeing a new deal.
A spokesman for the player said: “(Taylor and the club) remain happy to continue negotiations over a new and extended Newcastle contract.”
“Steven was disappointed and surprised to hear through third parties that the club had decided to transfer list him.
“He has always given 100 per cent to the club and will continue to do so, given the opportunity.”
Newcastle manager Chris Hughton is believed to be desperate to keep the highly rated defender at the club and his side will have a much better chance of remaining in the Premier League if Taylor stays. This weekend, the side face a trip to the Midlands and Newcastle’s poor defence is one of the reason people make Wolves betting tips to win the game.
Sol Campbell has been brought to the club but at 35 he won’t be able to play every game. Taylor is one of the most exciting defensive prospects in the country and has shown his commitment to the club before. He is believed to have had offers last summer when Newcastle suffered their relegation from the Premiership. The Geordie fans will be really hoping the club can still manage to strike a deal with the centre-back. If they can sort out the money issue, he will no doubt jump at the chance to stay.
