Is Hernandez worth backing in the Champions League?

Oct 28, 2010

He has been doing it for a generation and now it looks like Sir Alex Ferguson has unearthed another footballing gem.

Not many people had heard of Javier Hernandez when he signed for United in the summer, but after two winners in two matches he is quickly becoming a fan favourite.

His goalscoring feats are a welcome distraction for the United fans after a difficult few weeks off the field, culminating in Wayne Rooney’s dramatic transfer U-turn.

On the field Rooney, still United’s best player, has yet to really perform this season so Fergie has needed someone else to step up to the plate.

Dimitar Berbatov has provided this in spurts but Hernandez’s rise to prominence is a timely boost.

Could this be the time for Hernandez to transfer his goalscoring feats into the Champions League?

The Red Devils sit top of their group but go to Bursapor next week knowing they need a win to give them breathing space ahead of Rangers and Valencia – especially with a trip to Ibrox looming. Anyone looking to bet on Champions League winner should bear this in mind.

Ferguson is a loyal manager and likes to reward players for their good form, so don’t be surprised if Hernandez is given a starting birth in Turkey next week and he rewards Ferguson’s faith with another goal or two and the Champions League predictions reflect this.

Just how long he can keep up his good form remains to be seen.
