CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL

May 22nd, 2008 efootie Posted in Champions League, Chelsea, Manchester United | 1 Comment »

Manchester United won the Champions League by beating Chelsea 6-5 on penalties after a dramatic 1-1 draw.

Cristiano Ronaldo headed United in front after 26 minutes but Frank Lampard equalised before the interval.

Lampard and Didier Drogba hit the woodwork before the striker saw red in extra time for slapping Nemanja Vidic.

Ronaldo missed his penalty, but John Terry hit the post with a kick that would have won it for Chelsea and Edwin van der Sar saved from Nicolas Anelka.

It sparked wild celebrations for Sir Alex Ferguson and his players in the Moscow rain as United won Europe’s elite trophy for the third time, a triumph made more poignant as it came 50 years on from the Munich air crash.

Ferguson had made it his mission to take the trophy back to Manchester this year in memory of those who died, and those who survived, in the tragedy in Munich in February 1958.

And it gave the 66-year-old Scot his second Champions League triumph, repeating the success against Bayern Munich in Barcelona in 1999.

Cardiff 0 Portsmouth 1

May 18th, 2008 efootie Posted in FA Cup, Portsmouth | No Comments »

Kanu’s first-half goal won the FA Cup for Portsmouth against Cardiff City in a low-key final at Wembley.

The Nigerian scrambled home the winner at the near post eight minutes before half-time after Cardiff keeper Peter Enckelman fumbled John Utaka’s cross.

Cardiff enjoyed possession but rarely posed a serious threat, although Glenn Loovens had a goal ruled out for handball in first-half injury time.

And Portsmouth held on to claim the trophy for the first time since 1939.

It was a personal triumph for emotional Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp as he claimed his first major trophy in a management and coaching career stretching back 25 years.

He raced on to the pitch afterwards to celebrate as Portsmouth’s win earned them a place in next season’s Uefa Cup - their first European adventure.

The final was given a magnificent backdrop by both clubs’ noisy and colourful fans who clearly wanted to make the most of their moment in the limelight.

Wigan 0-2 Man Utd

May 12th, 2008 efootie Posted in Wigan Athletic, Manchester United, Premiership | 1 Comment »

Manchester United pipped rivals Chelsea to clinch their 17th title triumph with victory at Wigan.

Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring for United from the spot after 33 minutes following Emmerson Boyce’s foul on fit-again Wayne Rooney.

Emile Heskey then wasted Wigan’s best chance with a second-half header.

And substitute Ryan Giggs clinched United’s Premier League triumph - his 10th - with a cool finish from Rooney’s pass 10 minutes from time.

It sent manager Sir Alex Ferguson dancing down the touchline in the rain at the JJB Stadium in triumph as United were confirmed as champions two points clear of runners-up Chelsea.

Chelsea 1-1 Bolton

May 12th, 2008 efootie Posted in Bolton, Chelsea, Premiership | No Comments »

Bolton’s Matthew Taylor scored a late equaliser but with Manchester United winning at Wigan the goal did not cost Chelsea the Premier League title.

On a disappointing afternoon, Chelsea skipper John Terry dislocated his elbow but is hopeful of being fit for the Champions League final on 21 May.

Ali Al Habsi denied Florent Malouda and Didier Droba before substitute Andriy Shevchenko struck from six yards.

Ashley Cole cleared off the line before Taylor struck with a low drive.

Central defender Alex was culpable for the equaliser after a sloppy, lazy clearance that fell invitingly to Davies.

But in truth, there can be little doubt that the players already knew that with United leading 2-0 at Wigan their valiant quest to wrestle the title from Sir Alex Ferguson’s team was going to fall short.

Tottenham 0-2 Liverpool

May 12th, 2008 efootie Posted in Liverpool, Premiership, Tottenham Hotspur | No Comments »

Goals from Andriy Voronin and Fernando Torres secured a comfortable victory for Liverpool over Tottenham in a lack-lustre affair at White Hart Lane.

Voronin opened the scoring midway through the second-half slipping the ball past Radek Cerny after latching onto Torres’ flick-on.

Torres then made it 2-0 with a superb individual effort, his 24th league goal of his debut Liverpool season.

The Spaniard also hit the crossbar with a fine chip late on.

Although both teams had little to play for, Liverpool being secure in fourth place and Tottenham stuck in mid-table, entertainment was in short supply early on.

The visitors shaded a poor first 45 minutes, dominating possession with Tottenham struggling to get out of their half.
